The bane of my life is dealing with comments to postings which are nothing of the sort. These comments are spam promoting pills, stocks, wholesale goods etc. They are posted not so much in the hope that that anyone reading them will click on the link but so that search engines see many links back to the spammers site. These number of links help promote the site to a higher search engine position.
So here’s my strategy for dealing with them:-
1. In an attempt to make sure it’s a human making the posting, not a robot, everyone must answer the simple maths question. However, I think some robots are able to get over this :-(
2. Comments are approved by me before being visible. BUT, once your first comment has been approved later comments don’t need approval (make sure you enter the same e-mail address each time, it’s not published).
3. I’ve added some more ‘traps’ including one which spams the spammers own site!
Now I’d like to see if everything is working. Please would everyone post a comment here and let’s see if the good ones come through and we lose the spammers. Thanks.
Last year I called into a small bar in Waterloo Place in Edinburgh while I was waiting for my tour coach. It was just one room, no bigger than my back parlour. The only food advertised on the blackboard was Apple Pie. On the counter was a plastic dome covering six Mr Kipling apple pies, still in the boxes inner tray. I say Mr Kipling ….. more like Lidl. I din’t have one.
“Lowmans was always closed by the time I staggered out of The Lord Louis on the corner, bought my chips and headed for the Rail Station for my train home. Ah… healthy living”.
The Lord Louis was demolished 22 years ago so a diet of beer and Spam fritters didn’t do you that much harm ….. you’re still alive :-) Do you remember the Hilltop in Commercial Road? 40 years ago my after work beer was taken there and I often had a pork pie from the little glass cupboard on the counter which dated from the days before chilling was deemed necessary.
Lowmans was always closed by the time I staggered out of The Lord Louis on the corner, bought my chips and headed for the Rail Station for my train home. Ah… healthy living
“What is wrong with spam?”
Nothing wrong with real SPAM as in original SPAM.
“My mum used to make lovely spam fritters”
As did mine.
“… and so did that fish and chip shop that used to be in the road behind Southampton Bus Station. Mmmmmmmmm”.
Do you mean the one a couple of doors away from Lowmans the baker? If so I agree :-)
What is wrong with spam? My mum used to make lovely spam fritters, and so did that fish and chip shop that used to be in the road behind Southampton Bus Station. Mmmmmmmmm
>….and ‘ere ‘ee be in t’other…
Ah …. must be a new e-mail address because I had to approve this comment before it appeared. Thanks for the testing help.
>E’re oi be in one identity
Good. You must have used an e-mail address you’d previously used, and I’d approved, because the comment was posted automagically :-)
….and ‘ere ‘ee be in t’other…
E’re oi be in one identity
Sounds like you’ve got the problem by the throat!!!
Thanks Jeff, The Muller and Anon. As you see your comments appeared immediately and I’ve just deleted a nicely filed bunch of spam. All seems to be working as expected.
Let’s see if this works…
So am I a bot, or not?
Hope it is working Malc
