A comment was posted to the previous entry saying “I went to the farmers market & there were very few stalls”.
That’s absolutely right!
The number of stalls, rather surprisingly, started to drop off before Christmas. Sunday was almost pitiful :-( I asked the Market Manager about it and got a lot of ‘PR type’ speak to explain the reduced number of stalls none of which rang true. He claimed there were 55 stalls there on Sunday and when I countered that there must have been around 100 this time last year he let slip that the market peaked at 98. That’s 100 in my language!
Our purchases were:
1 x piece belly pork (eaten last night together with sprout tops etc)
2 x 1 litre organic Guernsey milk
1/2 pt Guernsey cream
1 x large crab (tonights dinner in the form of crab cakes with mango salsa and French Fries. The shell was then used to make 1 litre of crab bisque)
1 x bag Selsey prawns
1 x bag Brussel Sprout tops
2 x parsnips
1 x Swede
1 x Acorn Squash
A number of carrots
2 x packs plain pork sausages (the only ones for breakfast)
3 x packs plain beef sausages (for a Toad in the Hole later in the week)
I bought rabbit last time and made a pie. Unfortunately, Essy saw the rabbit before I jointed it and thought it was a foetus which put paid to any interest in eating it!
I drive by the buffalo every day and am surprised at how little they ever appear to move, or to do anything. They are in a huge field but only occupy the corner. At any onetime 80% of them are laid down in a tight huddle while a few are standing and a few eating the feed provided. They don’t appear to graze on grass. They’re about as active as cows on Prozac :-)
