Europe and Italy

megabusblog

A film “dedicated to those who believe that Italians behave the same as all other Europeans”.

Click here to watch the video. There is a bus relevance about one third of the way through. Anyway, I just love it!

Branded a bomber

Is the headline on this story in The Scottish Sun.

Outrage … Asian man was forced off bus and grilled at cop shop over rucksack and mobiles

An innocent Asian man was forced off a bus by passengers over fears that he was a suicide bomber – because he had a rucksack and two mobile phones. Cops swooped on the Megabus coach and ordered the startled lad off for questioning after barmy commuters badgered the driver over “concerns” he was a terrorist. Last night, the bigots on board were slammed by a horrified fellow passenger, who said: “It’s terrible that people are alienated over the colour of their skin. “I felt so sorry for the bloke because he hadn’t done anything wrong. If anyone else had two mobile phones, no one would have bothered.”

The drama began shortly after the bus left Glasgow for Aberdeen on Sunday afternoon. A passenger twice complained to the baffled driver who was then forced to make a detour to Cumbernauld police station in line with company security policy. The Asian was allowed back on to the coach after he was quizzed and searched by cops, who reassured everyone on board he was not a risk. But the incident has sparked concern among Scotland’s Muslim community.

Ghulam Siddiquie, general secretary of the Lanarkshire Muslim Welfare Society, said last night: “Things like this are happening too much now.” “Our community is very concerned and angry because we are being victimised over the colour of our skin.” “Even though we are used to it now, it is still hurtful.”

Strathclyde Police confirmed they quizzed the man after unfounded “concerns” raised by passengers on the bus. A megabus.com for said: “Our driver followed our security procedures and contacted police.”

Buses in the news

There have been quite a few buses in the news over the past couple of days. The first was about “A man who took a bus on a 30-mile joyride through West Yorkshire leaving a £250,000 trail of destruction has been jailed.” Here’s some footage from a helicopter following the chase. N.B. There is no sound on this film.

Then the story of the bus toppling over.

And then, today, a Wilts & Dorset bus nearly topples.

Leather seats and farting cows!

I’ve just come across Bus Users UK and the Autumn edition of their quarterly newsletter which includes the following letter.

Drawbacks of leather seats

I have been a member of Bus Users UK for a number of years ….. I just wanted to note some problems with the current trend toward considering leather bus seats as an attractive ‘luxury’ touch on buses. Leather seats are not suitable for vegetarians, including vegans such as myself …”

A desire to eat the covering of a bus seat is a new one to me. Is this some type of fetish behaviour?

The letter continued “Leather from cows has a significant greenhouse gas impact. As with beef and cow’s milk, the farming of cows causes a large emission of the powerful greenhouse gas, methane.”

So farting’s a problem as well :-(

National Express: another day, another drama

“Now for Irrational Express, an everyday drama of transport folk going slowly round the bend. Today, episode 297: The Spanish Inquisition, starring Jorge “deputy chairman” Cosmen and, in a supporting role, Brian “jilted” Souter (of Stagecoach fame).”

So begins an article in the The Telegraph. Love it :-)

And here’s a picture of a NatEx coach which appeared in Private Eye in February 2008.
